Port Authority spokesman Tony Ciavolella said PATH trains were delayed during rush hour last night (Jan. 25) because of an electrical problem at a Port Authority electrical substation in Jersey City, according to this report by Greg Hanlon published by The Jersey Journal.
Instead of the normal rush-hour waiting time of 4 to 7 minutes, PATH trains were running every 10 to 15 minutes last night, Ciavolella said.
"Basically, the trains are being slowed down in order to conserve power," he said.
Shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday, two of the three feeders that carry electricity from PSE&G to the Port Authority substation at Washington and First streets went out.
The cause of the failure was a tripped Port Authority line-breaker, according to a PSE&G spokesperson Jeannie Pieratelli.
Ciavolella said he could not estimate how long it would take to complete the repairs or what it would mean for the morning commute.
The substation at Washington and First streets is one of 12 in the area that serve the PATH, Ciavolella said.
