Train derails in Miss.; no injuries
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Officials said a Tuesday morning train derailment might mean the closure of the Mississippi 29 crossing at New Augusta for several days, the American reports.

The road around the track will have to be repaired and repaved, a process that may take several days, said New Augusta Mayor Albert Garner.

"A lot of coal got spread over private property and will have to be cleaned up," Garner said.

There were no injuries when a Union Pacific train derailed onto the state highway just north of U.S. 98. Seven rail cars carrying coal jumped the track between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Although some of the coal spilled into a residential neighborhood, no tanker cars were involved and no evacuations were ordered, Garner said.

The engine stayed on the track, and the train crew was near it. No injuries were reported, Garner said.

Local law enforcement agencies will help divert traffic through downtown New Augusta until repairs have been made, Garner said.
