CHICAGO - Almost a year after federal regulators approved the merger of the Canadian National and EJ&E railways, government officials toured some of the communities affected by the transaction, the Daily Herald reports.
Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Szabo and Surface Transportation Board Chairman Daniel Elliot visited railroad crossings along the EJ&E in Barrington and other communities Monday with U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean, a Barrington Democrat.
The merger split the region as CN promised to remove trains from its more congested lines and locate them on the underused EJ&E tracks.
Bean and other leaders in towns along the EJ&E fought the proposal, while officials representing communities expecting to get less train traffic supported it.
The STB decided in favor of CN buying the EJ&E on Dec. 24.
Bean said Monday's tour was important because it allowed federal authorities to see the impact of more train traffic on affected suburbs.
