CHICAGO -- Call it "bullycam.''
School bus bullies in north suburban Gurnee better watch out -- a $100,000 arsenal of security cameras is going to be watching them, The Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Gurnee police are contributing a $50,000 federal grant to Gurnee School District 56 to help outfit its fleet of 34 buses with cameras, in part because of concerns about bullies acting up on the grade school buses.
The district also is kicking in $50,000, officials said.
"It's very difficult for a driver to drive a bus and keep an eye on what goes on in the back of the bus,'' said District 56 Supt. John Hutton. "Curbing bullying is a priority for us, and we think this will help.''
A survey of students identified bullying as a concern, especially for youngsters in the third, fourth and fifth grades, Hutton said.
"We can't always catch them,'' he said.
Gurnee Police said cameras might capture other safety problems. "If something else happens, if a stranger gets aboard a bus, it could help us,'' Cmdr. Jay Patrick said.
