CHICAGO -- Faced with a budget gap in 2010, Pace staff is proposing cuts or service reductions on more than 50 bus routes, as well as a hike in fares for disabled riders that one advocate calls "devastating,'' The Chicago Sun Times reports.
Paratransit fares would increase to $4.50 in the city and $3.50 in the suburbs.
The bus routes proposed for elimination include four serving riders in Naperville and the Elk Grove-Rosemont CTA route and Wood Dale-Rosemont CTA route.
Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot said the proposals address a $6.5 million deficit in its suburban service budget for 2010, and a $29 million gap for paratransit.
Thirteen public hearings will be held on reductions and fare increases starting Oct. 19.
"We're trying to be very upfront about this," Wilmot said.
The Pace board will review the proposals at the Oct. 14 meeting. Pace officials will have a chance to amend the budget at the November meeting.
