UTU helping to ease workload of local treasurers
The UTU International is taking steps through computer technology to ease the work burden of local treasurers.

New computer programs will permit the International to communicate directly with carriers to ensure that changes in UTUIA and Discipline Income Protection (DIP) deductions are made promptly and accurately.

The Web-based technology will be put into effect for so-called direct-pay locals, where International union dues are being electronically credited to the International. Changes to UTUIA and DIP deductions will be an overlay to the existing direct-pay process. The changes will become effective within the next 30 to 45 days.

"These changes will shift the burden from local treasurers, who now have the thankless and time-consuming job of individually inputting and double-checking these changes," said UTU International President Paul Thompson. "The UTU is moving toward greater automation in all areas."

The new procedures are designed to work most efficiently for locals using cable or DSL links to the Internet, but those locals still using dial-up connections also will be able to take advantage of these new processes designed to make the job of the local treasurer less time-consuming.

"To encourage greater use of this new technology, locals converting their Internet connections to cable or DSL are authorized to make the additional cost of cable and DSL connections a valid expense item for treasurers," Thompson said.
