NJ Transit urged to turn off idling trains
SUFFERN, N.Y. -- The noise from train cars left idling all night long has prompted Assemblyman Ryan Karben of Rockland County and Village of Suffern officials to call on NJ Transit to turn off those engines, the MidHudson News reports.

Karben, Mayor-Elect John Keegan, and Trustees-Elect Trish Abato and Dagan LaCorte yesterday criticized the company for leaving its trains running throughout the night, citing the noise and environmental factors as the basis for their call.

Karben said it is not a good thing to allow those cars to run all night.

“This is not just a quality of life issue for the village – it’s a question of protecting the health and well-being of Suffern residents,” Karben said. “NJ Transit needs to put the brakes on its idling trains so Suffern residents can get some sleep at night.”

Up to nearly a dozen NJ Transit trains can be found idling in Suffern at night, approximately one-quarter mile north of the Suffern Train Station.

In addition to creating noise pollution, trains left idling for prolonged periods of time produce diesel exhaust emissions that pollute the air.
