MBTA contract awarded
SAN FRANCISCO -- URS Corporation (URS) said that, through a joint venture formed with DMJM+Harris, it has been awarded a contract by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to provide design and planning services for the final phase of the MBTA's Silver Line project, according to this release issued by URS.

The multiyear contract has the potential to generate $10 million in revenues for URS, the company said.

The Silver Line is the fifth rapid transit line in Boston's T system, the oldest public transit system in the U.S., and the first line in the T system to use a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. When it is completed, the Silver Line will connect the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, The South End and Chinatown to the city's commercial center and South Boston Waterfront District, as well as to Logan Airport. The final phase of the project (Phase III) includes the development of an underground BRT connection between Boston's South Station and the New England Medical Center.

Commenting on the contract, Gary V. Jandegian, President, URS Division, said: "We're very happy about this important win on the Silver Line project, which continues URS' sixteen year relationship with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The Silver Line, which utilizes state of the art ITS communication technology to inform riders of the next arriving vehicle and allows operators to react quickly to changing conditions, is one of the most advanced bus rapid transit systems in the world. We're excited to be continuing our work on such an innovative public transit project."

URS Corporation offers a range of professional planning and design, systems engineering and technical assistance, program and construction management, and operations and maintenance services for surface transportation, air transportation, rail transportation, industrial process, facilities and logistics support, water/wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management and military platform support. Headquartered in San Francisco, the company said it operates in over 20 countries with more than 25,500 employees providing engineering services to federal, state and local governmental agencies as well as private clients in the chemical, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, forest products, mining, oil and gas, and utilities industries.
