| It's a community thing |

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- "When a union supports its community, the community supports the union," says UTU Bus Local 23 Chairperson Bonnie Morr.
This adage was proven several years ago during a 37-day strike by Local 23 when its members, without paychecks, dipped into their savings to put gasoline in their own automobiles to provide essential alternative transportation to the elderly and neediest in Santa Cruz who were left without bus transportation during that strike.

| Only out of crisis |

At last somebody said it in public: "The only way you can change anything in this country is a crisis." The speaker was Amtrak CFO William H. Campbell, and the occasion was the Railway Supply Institute’s Amtrak vendor forum in Washington on April 30.
