Retired former GM&O Gen. Chairperson
James C. Clark passes away at age 82Retired former Gulf, Mobile & Ohio (GM&O) General Chairperson James C. Clark, 82, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2000, in the wake of a heart attack suffered at his granddaughter’s wedding last weekend.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home in Bloomington, Ill., from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 28, according to UTU’s retired former Illinois State Legislative Director Pat Simmons of Local 1929, E. St. Louis, Ill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, at the Unitarian Church in Bloomington, Ill.
Brother Clark, a member of Local 234 in Bloomington, Ill., began his rail career as a fireman on the Alton Railroad, and joined Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen & Enginemen (BLF&E) Lodge 40 on Sept. 23, 1941. He was soon promoted to locomotive engineer with the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad (now part of the Illinois Central).
Active in union affairs, Brother Clark was local legislative representative and, ultimately, was elected chairperson of the BLF&E’s Illinois Legislative Board, where he served for many years.
Clark, whose GM&O general committee was one of the first after unification and creation of the UTU to merge with a predecessor union’s general committee, retired Feb. 10, 1986.
