The Legal Department handles the legal affairs of the International, including providing assistance when needed to General Committees of Adjustment and assigned International Officers in dealing with carriers in negotiations, grievance handling and arbitration. The Legal Department also represents the interests of the Organization before courts and federal administrative agencies, both offensively and defensively, as appropriate, at the request of the International President and Officers, General Chairpersons and State Legislative Directors.

Since the United Transportation Union operates under the provisions of the Railway Labor Act, the Federal Labor-Management Relations Act (Taft-Hartley, and the Landrum-Griffin Act in the United States, and under the Industrial Disputes and Investigation Act of Canada, legal problems are constantly encountered which require the full time attention of competent trained attorneys.

The intent and purpose of proposed legislation dealing with labor relations, hours of service, safety appliances, employers’ liability, retirement and unemployment benefits, and fraternal insurance require the UTU Legal Department’s constant study and advice.
