Charlotte Voters approve Commuter Rail & Bus Program
Charlotte, NC -- Charlotte area voters approved a half-cent sales tax two weeks ago to pay for a $1 billion commuter rail and bus program. Fifty-eight percent of Mecklenburg County voters approved the measure. The vote means the half-cent sales tax will be levied on everything except food and prescription drugs beginning next year. The tax is excepted to raise $50 million a year for the next 20 years to pay for commuter rail and busways. (11/30/98 Urban Transit News)
